Carol Lisa Alexander DNP, APRN, ACNS/NP-BC
Visionary, Entrepreneur, President and CAO of CAAN Academy of Nursing’s Practical Nursing (PN) and LPN-RN ADN Nursing Programs. In addition; she is President of the Illinois South Suburban Chapter of the National Black Nurses Association (ISSNBNA), a member of the American Nurses Association (ANA), and a board-certified Adult Clinical Nurse Specialist practicing as a Nurse Practitioner (NP) at KAM Alliance a community mental health clinic. Dr. Alexander has been committed to caring for the medically underserved, economically disadvantaged, and at-risk populations for over forty-three (43) years.
In 2011, Dr. Alexander received her DNP on completing her research on the Healthcare Disparity in America and instituting the Adult Nursing Program. Her research concluded that “The number of ethnic and racial minorities graduating from nursing programs does not meet the number of minority nurses that are needed for patient care, nursing faculty and executive positions here in the United States (U.S.). In the nursing work-force, fewer than 9% of nurses are ethnic minorities and fewer than 5% are males (USDHHS/HRSA, 2004).
Unfortunately, these statistics, remain true today, revealing that the healthcare disparity is directly linked to the deficiency of minority nurses within the healthcare community. Therefore, Dr. Alexander’s purpose and the ultimate goal is in increasing minority nurses through providing a nursing education platform to promote caring, compassionate nurses with a commitment to their community in the effort to decrease the healthcare disparity.
In 2008, the CAAN Academy of Nursing opened the Practical Nursing (PN) program within the Thornton Fractional (TFD) high school district and in 2010 the Adult PN program opened which collectively has successfully graduated over 150 students. The Alumni expressed the need for an LPN-RN ADN Degree program in South Metro Illinois, which opened on Feb. 19th, 2019. Dr. Alexander now envisions a third level of nursing for the Academy ASN-BSN and is actively working towards attaching an integrated health home to the Academy.
