ANA-Illinois stands with the American Nurses Association in expressing deep concern about the Department of Education’s finalized graduate student loan rulemaking.

This rule excludes nursing from the definition of “professional degree” programs under federal graduate loan borrowing limits. ANA reports over 245,000 nurses and nurse advocates signed the RNAction petition, with tens of thousands of comments submitted during the public comment period. Yet, the final rule moves forward.

This decision threatens access to advanced nursing education at a time when Illinois and the nation need more nurse practitioners, nurse educators, nurse anesthesiologists, nurse midwives, nurse researchers, and nurse leaders. It places another barrier in front of nurses seeking graduate preparation, especially those serving rural communities, underserved populations, and areas with limited access to care.

Nursing is a profession. Nursing education is essential to patient safety, workforce stability, access to care, and health outcomes. Policies affecting educational financing must reflect the value and scope of nursing practice.

As ANA shares its national message (read here), ANA-Illinois adds our voice on behalf of nurses across our state. We urge federal leaders to correct this harmful approach and protect access to the financial resources nurses need to pursue advanced degrees.

We encourage every nurse in Illinois to stay informed, remain engaged, and continue advocating for the future of our profession.

In solidarity,

Dr. Zeh Wellington DNP, RN, NE-BC
President
American Nurses Association Illinois
