Keynote Session: Why We Continue: Equity, Ethics, and Nursing Education Today

In the current climate, student nurses and nursing faculty are navigating increasing complexity around equity-focused work in education and practice. This session creates space to acknowledge that reality while reaffirming nursing’s ethical responsibility to advance fairness, dignity, and justice for all. Grounded in the ANA Code of Ethics, the audience will explore how equity-minded teaching, learning, and advocacy remain essential to professional nursing – especially when the work feels constrained or contested. Through shared reflection and dialogue, this session highlights how students and faculty can continue this work with integrity, courage, and collective accountability, ensuring that nursing education remains aligned with the profession’s core values, social contract and commitment to the public good.

At the end of this session, audience members will be able to:

  1. Examine how the current sociopolitical environment impacts equity-focused work in nursing education and professional formation.
  2. Apply principles from the ANA Code of Ethics to sustain equity-centered teaching, learning, and advocacy despite organizational or external constraints.
  3. Identify practical strategies students and faculty can use to continue advancing fairness and equity in academic and practice settings.
