Alina Conde, a passionate Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE), has dedicated her career to forensic nursing and trauma-informed care. She has a background in emergency nursing and a deep commitment to supporting survivors of sexual assault.

Alina’s role as a SANE nurse allows her to make a direct impact on the lives of patients at a time when they need it most. Through her work, she has become a powerful voice in forensic nursing, and her journey is an inspiration to others in the healthcare field.

Getting Started: Alina’s Journey into Nursing

Alina Conde began her nursing career after graduating from nursing school in April 2021, during the height of COVID-19. Her first job was in the ER, where she learned the skills of quick thinking and adaptability. Over the years, Alina has worked in small community hospitals, where has taken on roles as a preceptor and charge nurse, helping to guide and support her fellow nurses.

It was during her time in the ER that she became aware of forensic nursing, a specialty that would ultimately change her career path. A nursing mentor who was also a SANE coordinator told Alina about the specialty and encouraged her to pursue it.

“I was initially hesitant,” Alina admitted. “But after learning more from my mentor, I realized the significant impact I could have in the role of a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner.”

Forensic Nursing is the practice of combining nursing with forensic science. It is used in cases with victims of abuse, where patients not only receive specialized care, but nurses also gather evidence of the abuse victims receive.

Understanding the Value of SANE Nursing

As a SANE nurse, Alina works at multiple hospitals in Chicago, including Sinai Chicago, Advocate Lutheran General and Gottlieb Memorial Hospital. Forensic nursing, particularly in the ER, plays a crucial role in providing immediate care for survivors of sexual assault.

Her responsibilities as a SANE nurse extend far beyond the immediate aftermath of trauma. From detailed physical exams to offering emotional support and education, Alina ensures that patients receive the comprehensive care they need to start their healing journey.

“A lot of people think it’s just about the evidence collection,” Alina explained. “But it’s so much more than that. We do a full head-to-toe assessment, provide STD testing, educate the patient on their health and what to look for in the coming weeks, and follow up with care as needed.”

Not only is there a practical side of forensic nursing, but there is also an emotional component.

“Our focus is on ensuring that the patient feels supported and heard during one of the most difficult times in their life,” Alina said. “It’s about more than just that one moment. We’re giving them the tools and resources they need for the long term, both physically and emotionally.”

By combining acute medical care with ongoing education and support, SANE nurses help survivors navigate their recovery while ensuring they receive proper medical attention.

Becoming SANE certified is easier than you might think. Nurses must complete a didactic course and second a clinical log. These are requirements throughout all 50 states. In Illinois, hospitals can utilize the online course from the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) or nurses can attend in-person courses provided by the Illinois State Attorney.

Taking the Leap: Finding the Power to Help People

Alina’s journey into forensic nursing wasn’t without hesitation. Initially, she was unsure if she could handle the emotional intensity of working with sexual assault survivors, particularly younger patients.

Her first case was a turning point. “It was a young adolescent, and I was scared,” Alina recalled. “But at the end, she gave me a card, thanking me for what I had done that day. That moment made me realize this is what I want to do. I want to make a difference.”

For Alina, becoming a SANE nurse made her realize the power she has to help people. Her first case showed her firsthand just how impactful having someone to help you through a traumatic experience can be.

Emotional Resilience and Reward

Working as a SANE nurse presents both emotional and mental challenges. The weight of handling trauma cases and ensuring that patients are treated with care can be overwhelming at times. However, Alina credits her training in trauma-informed care with giving her the tools to support both her patients and herself.

“It’s hard not to take that trauma with you, but we’re trained to focus on the patient’s needs while also recognizing the importance of self-care as a nurse,” Alina said.

Despite the challenges, the rewards far outweigh the difficulties. “Seeing the impact I can make in someone’s life, even in such a short period, is incredibly rewarding,” she added.

Alina’s Future Goals in Nursing

Looking ahead, Alina’s goal is to become nationally SANE certified. Accomplishing this would allow her to sit for her board exam. Additionally, she hopes to take on a leadership role as a SANE coordinator, where she can guide hospitals in implementing specialized protocols and education for sexual assault patients.

“My goal is to build programs that ensure sexual assault survivors receive the care and attention they deserve. This field is so important, and I want to contribute in any way I can.”

The Impact of ANA Membership

Alina recently joined ANA-Illinois, and although she is new to the organization, she is already benefiting from its resources. “One of the first articles I read was about human trafficking and how to identify patients who may be victims,” she shared. “I downloaded it and shared it with my colleagues in the ER because it’s relevant to what we see.”

Alina encourages nurses to find the values of the educational materials available through the ANA. These resources have helped her stay informed and continue growing in her field. “It’s been a great resource, and I love how accessible and affordable the membership is.”

Reflecting on Her Nursing Journey

Alina Conde’s journey from an ER nurse to a dedicated SANE nurse has been one of personal and professional growth. She takes pride in her ability to overcome fear and self-doubt, trusting in her skills and passion for making a difference.

Alina encourages other nurses to consider becoming SANE certified and to overcome any initial fears or doubts. “Take the jump,” she said. “The fear is always there when you’re learning something new, but you just have to trust yourself and go for it.”

Her advice is to embrace continuous learning and recognize that the field of forensic nursing offers endless opportunities for growth and impact.

“I’m proud of myself for stepping out of my comfort zone and continuing to grow. The impact we have as nurses, especially in forensic nursing, is so important. I hope that by sharing my story, I can inspire others to take on new challenges and make a difference.”

For nurses looking to make a lasting impact, Alina’s story serves as a powerful reminder that growth and advocacy go hand in hand.
