Nurses continue to redefine what it means to serve their communities. While many practice in hospitals, clinics, and other traditional healthcare settings, others are finding innovative ways to expand nursing beyond the bedside. In this feature, ANA-Illinois highlights Vanessa Walker, RN, BSN, whose passion for patient advocacy inspired her to create Fit & Savage Wellness, a nurse-led business focused on bridging the gap between healthcare and everyday wellness. Her journey is a reminder that the impact of nursing extends far beyond the walls of a healthcare facility.

Seeing a Need Beyond Traditional Healthcare

Throughout her nursing career, Vanessa Walker, has served in bedside nursing, nursing leadership, discharge planning, care coordination, health coaching, and operational leadership. Each role offered a different perspective on patient care, but together they revealed a common challenge: many patients struggled once they left the healthcare system.

While hospitals and clinics provide essential care, Walker recognized that many individuals needed continued support to navigate chronic conditions, improve their health, and confidently manage life at home. Rather than accepting those gaps as an unavoidable part of healthcare, she saw an opportunity for nurses to make an even greater impact.

That vision became the foundation for Fit & Savage Wellness, a nurse-led wellness business that combines macro-friendly meal preparation, personalized health coaching, Registered Nurse Concierge Services, care coordination, advocacy, education, and ongoing support to help individuals take control of their health.

“Healthcare shouldn’t end when a patient leaves the hospital or physician’s office,” Walker shared. “Patients often need ongoing support outside the walls of a hospital or clinic.”

For Walker, nursing isn’t simply about treating illness, it’s about empowering people with the knowledge, resources, and support they need to live healthier lives every day.

Taking the Leap

Launching a business meant stepping beyond a traditional nursing role, but Walker quickly realized that nursing had already equipped her with everything she needed to succeed.

“The skills I have learned as a nurse, such as problem-solving, making decisions under pressure, leadership, adaptability, advocacy, and figuring things out when there isn’t a perfect roadmap gave me the confidence, I needed to take the leap.” Walker said.

Like many entrepreneurs, she admits she didn’t feel completely ready.

“Did I feel completely ready? No, but I believed in myself and everything I have learned in my nursing career.”

Walker’s experience demonstrates that nurses develop far more than clinical expertise. Every patient interaction strengthens leadership, communication, resilience, critical thinking, and adaptability. Skills that can open doors to innovative career paths and new ways of improving healthcare.

Redefining Innovation in Nursing

When people hear the word innovation, they often think of cutting-edge technology or groundbreaking medical devices. Walker believes innovation can look much different.

“Many think that innovation means inventing a medical device or technology,” she explained. “I think it can mean nurses recognizing an unmet need and designing a better way to meet it.”

That philosophy is the driving force behind Fit & Savage Wellness.

By bringing together nutrition, prevention, education, health coaching, and nurse concierge support, Walker has created a model that extends nursing beyond traditional healthcare settings and into the everyday lives of the people she serves.

“Fit & Savage combines nutrition, prevention, education, health coaching, and nurse concierge support in a way that reaches people where they actually live. I believe this is a huge need in the communities we serve.”

Her approach reflects one of nursing’s greatest strengths: meeting people where they are, building trust, and helping individuals navigate their health with confidence.

Success Measured by Lives Changed

For Walker, success isn’t defined by business growth or milestones.

Instead, it’s measured by the lives she has the privilege to impact.

“My most rewarding moments are seeing someone’s health actually change when a client realizes they are capable of improving their health, becomes more independent, understands their body, or no longer feels overwhelmed. It brings me joy.”

Those moments continue to reinforce her mission of making healthcare more accessible, personal, and proactive while empowering people to become active participants in their own health and wellness.

Encouraging the Next Generation of Nurse Leaders

Walker hopes more nurses recognize that their education and experience can create opportunities far beyond traditional roles.

For those considering entrepreneurship or another nontraditional career path, her advice is simple.

“Start with the problem you’re passionate about.” Walker said. “Nurses already possess an incredible set of transferable skills; entrepreneurship is another way to use them.”

She also offers a reminder that resonates with anyone waiting for the “perfect” moment to begin.

“All the lights are never green.”

Whether launching a business, leading a new initiative, or creating an innovative model of care, meaningful change often begins before every uncertainty has been resolved.

Expanding the Practice of Nursing

When asked what she hopes ANA-Illinois members take away from her story, Walker’s answer perfectly captures her vision for the future of the profession.

“Nurses can lead businesses, innovate, educate, advocate, build programs, improve access, and create entirely new models of care while still honoring what nursing is at its core.”

She hopes her journey encourages other nurses to think differently about the possibilities within the profession and to recognize the many ways they can create meaningful change in their communities.

Walker concluded with a message that beautifully summarizes both her journey and the mission behind Fit & Savage Wellness: “I didn’t leave nursing; I just expanded my practice of nursing.”

As healthcare continues to evolve, nurses are uniquely positioned to identify unmet needs, advocate for innovative solutions, and create new models of care that improve lives. Walker’s story reminds us that the future of nursing isn’t defined by where nurses work, it’s defined by the impact they choose to make.
