A Calling Rooted in Compassion

For Melissa Garcia, nursing has always been more than a career, it is a calling rooted in service, empathy, and purpose. Inspired from a young age to help others through difficult moments, Melissa describes nursing as an opportunity to be “someone’s sunshine on their worst day.” Being named a 2025 NextGen Ambassador affirms that purpose and strengthens her commitment to using her voice to uplift others and represent the future of nursing with compassion and integrity.

Serving on the Front Lines of Care

Melissa currently practices as an emergency department nurse at the University of Chicago Medical Center, where no two days are the same. In a fast-paced, unpredictable environment, she provides critical care and support to patients during some of the most challenging moments of their lives. Through her work, Melissa is driven to deliver compassionate, patient-centered care while advocating for individuals and families in crisis.

Using Her Voice Through Advocacy and Leadership

Working in the emergency department has shaped how Melissa uses her voice as a nurse. She advocates fiercely for patients who may feel overwhelmed, frightened, or unable to speak for themselves. She emphasizes the importance of calm leadership and clear communication, whether collaborating with interdisciplinary teams, speaking up for patient safety, or ensuring patients and families fully understand their care. For Melissa, advocacy is not optional; it is a responsibility.

Preparing the Next Generation of Nurses

Melissa believes the future of nursing depends on more than clinical expertise alone. While strong skills are essential, she stresses that resilience, adaptability, confident communication, and mental health awareness are equally critical. She encourages the next generation of nurses to advocate not only for patients, but also for themselves and the profession as a whole, recognizing that protecting one’s well-being is key to sustaining meaningful, effective practice.

Learning and Connecting at the ANCC Magnet & Pathway Conference

As an ANA-Illinois NextGen Ambassador, Melissa attended the 2025 ANCC Magnet & Pathway Conference, an experience she describes as both inspiring and energizing. Surrounded by passionate nurses from across the country, she valued the opportunity to network, share experiences, and learn from leaders who are actively shaping the future of nursing practice and professional excellence.

The Power of Mentorship

To Melissa, mentorship represents guidance, support, and honest insight from those who have walked the path before her. Through working with ANA-Illinois member mentors, she hopes to gain perspective, confidence, and clarity as she continues to grow as a nurse leader and advocate while remaining grounded in the values that led her to nursing in the first place.

Leading With Compassion

One value consistently guides how Melissa shows up as a nurse: compassion. She leads with empathy, meets patients where they are, and never forgets that for many, a hospital visit represents one of the hardest days of their lives. This patient-centered mindset anchors her practice and her leadership approach.

Advice for Emerging Nurse Leaders

For nursing students and early-career nurses aspiring to leadership, Melissa offers simple but powerful advice: speak up, stay curious, and seek mentorship. Leadership, she notes, does not begin with a title, it begins with how you show up every day for patients, colleagues, and the profession.

A First-Generation Nurse Shaping the Future

As a first-generation nurse, Melissa’s journey fuels her determination to break barriers, challenge norms, and create opportunities where none previously existed. This NextGen Ambassador opportunity represents more than personal growth, it is a platform to amplify overlooked voices, advocate fiercely for patients and nurses, and demonstrate that true leadership is rooted in courage, compassion, and paving the way for others to follow.
