ANA-Illinois is honored to highlight Dr. Zeh Wellington, DNP, MSN, RN, NE-BC, President of ANA-Illinois. A visionary leader, dedicated clinician, and passionate advocate, Dr. Wellington brings powerful purpose to his role anchored in integrity, service, and a deep belief in the impact nurses have on every corner of healthcare. Through his leadership, ANA-Illinois continues to strengthen its mission of elevating nurses, protecting the profession, and shaping a future where every nurse is empowered to lead.
What Inspired Him to Serve
Dr. Wellington’s journey into leadership is rooted in both calling and conviction. “I was inspired by a deep belief that nursing is not just a profession, for me…it’s a calling to help others and to lead change. Serving on the ANA-Illinois Board allows me to amplify the voices of nurses across our state, advocate for policies that protect our patients and our profession and ensure that every nurse has the tools and support to succeed. I wanted to be part of shaping the future of nursing, not just reacting to it.” His words reflect a leader committed not only to advocacy, but to building a stronger, more unified nursing community statewide.
Leadership in One Word: Impact
When asked to define being a nurse leader in a single word, Dr. Wellington chose “Impact.” “Leadership is about creating meaningful impact on patients, on colleagues, on our communities, on future nurses, and on the health system. Every decision, every conversation, every action should move us closer to better care and improved communities.” For Dr. Wellington, leadership is not theoretical, it is lived daily, through action, integrity, and intention.
The Biggest Opportunity for Nurses Today
Dr. Wellington believes that this moment in healthcare presents a pivotal opportunity for nurses to step into broader arenas of influence. “The biggest opportunity for nurses today is to lead beyond the bedside. We are trusted professionals with a unique perspective on patient care and health equity. This is our moment to influence policy, innovate care models, and drive conversations about well-being and access. Nurses can and should be at every table where decisions about health are made.” His vision reinforces the vital role of nurses not only in clinical settings but also in legislative, administrative, and community arenas.
Nursing in Illinois Is…
Dr. Wellington’s pride in nursing radiates through every part of his response. “Nursing in Illinois is a source of profound pride for me because it represents resilience, advocacy, and excellence in action. I see it every day. Pride in nursing isn’t just about the title… it’s about the impact we make every single day.” He continues with a powerful reflection on what it means to serve as a leader among Illinois nurses: “It’s the pride of standing up for patients when no one else will, the pride of shaping policy that protects our profession, and the pride of mentoring the next generation of nurses who will carry this torch forward.” He closes with a heartfelt affirmation: “So when I say ‘I am proud to be an Illinois Nurse’ I mean that I am proud of our history, of our present, and our combined future, a future we are building together. I am proud to be a working clinician president. We stand united and I am proud to be your president.”
His Tip for Nurses Who Want to Lead
Dr. Wellington’s advice to emerging nurse leaders is both empowering and actionable. “If I could give one tip to nurses who want to lead, it would be this: Lead from where you are. Leadership isn’t about a title, it’s about influence, integrity, and action. Start by owning your voice, advocating for what matters, and building trust with those around you.” He emphasizes that leadership begins with presence and purpose, not position.
“Every interaction is an opportunity to lead whether you’re at the bedside, in a boardroom, or mentoring a colleague or future nurse. Leadership grows from consistency and courage, not position. So don’t wait for permission… join ANA-Illinois, step forward, speak up, and lead with purpose.”
