Vergetta Harris, MSN, RN
Vergetta Harris began her healthcare journey as a volunteer at Hines Hospital, serving as a Candy Striper. Inspired by her mother’s stories of caring for trauma patients and her experiences as a Girl Scout, Vergetta developed a passion for helping others. After high school, she earned her Nurse Aide certification and worked in nursing homes.
Vergetta progressed through the nursing profession, completing her Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) training, earning an Associate of Science degree, and passing the Registered Nurse (RN) boards. She later obtained a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and a Master’s degree in Nursing Administration.
Throughout her career, Vergetta has demonstrated unwavering dedication to nursing and patient care. She developed a program to help staff recognize hazards and compliance issues, enhancing patient outcomes and safety. Additionally, she established a blood pressure screening program at her church’s food pantry to connect individuals with limited resources to healthcare services.
Vergetta has co-chaired two youth programs with the Black Nurses Association, where she serves as vice-president. These programs expose youth to healthcare services, aiming to inspire and prepare them for careers in the field.
Her contributions extend to serving on the Heartland Head Start board and receiving a Daisy Award for outstanding patient care. Vergetta has been featured in local newspapers for her dedication and has served on the practice council at her place of employment.
