What are your credentials?
BSN, RN, CMSRN, PMH-BC, NPD-BC, NE-BC
How long have you been a member of ANA-Illinois?
2 years
What inspired you to become a nurse?
Taking care of my ill grandmother when I was young inspired me to pursue a career in nursing. Through that experience, I learned that nursing requires immense dedication, compassion, and a genuine commitment to serving others. It sparked a passion within me to make a difference in people’s lives by providing the same care, comfort, and support that my grandmother received during her illness.
How long have you been a nurse, and what specialties or areas have you worked in?
I have been a nurse for 16 years, with experience across multiple countries, healthcare systems, and nursing specialties. Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to work in pediatrics, intensive care, emergency medicine, perioperative services, oncology, psychiatry, staff training and education, medical-surgical nursing, and nursing leadership. These diverse experiences have broadened my clinical expertise, strengthened my adaptability, and deepened my commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centered care.
What is one thing you love most about the nursing profession?
One thing I love most about the nursing profession is the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in someone’s life every single day. Whether it is providing comfort during a difficult diagnosis, offering reassurance during a moment of fear, advocating for a patient’s needs, or simply being present when they need support, nursing allows me to positively impact people during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives.
What makes nursing so special to me is knowing that even the smallest acts of kindness, compassion, and care can leave a lasting impression. Seeing a patient recover, regain hope, or feel comforted because of something I did reminds me why I chose this profession. At the end of each day, there is no greater reward than knowing I have made a difference in someone’s journey toward healing and well-being.
What does being a member of ANA-Illinois mean to you?
To me, ANA-Illinois is more than a professional organization, it is an opportunity to learn, grow, and collaborate with fellow nurses who are passionate about making a difference. It provides a platform to stay informed, contribute to the future of nursing, and advocate for policies that improve patient outcomes and support the nursing workforce. As a nurse leader, being part of ANA-Illinois allows me to continue developing professionally while helping inspire and empower the next generation of nurse.
What is one challenge in healthcare or nursing that you are passionate about improving?
One challenge in healthcare that I am deeply passionate about improving is staff well-being. Nurses dedicate themselves to caring for others, often during some of the most difficult moments in patients’ lives, yet the physical, emotional, and mental demands of the profession can take a significant toll on caregivers themselves.
I believe that when we invest in the well-being of nurses and healthcare professionals, everyone benefits—including our patients. Creating a healthy work environment where staff feel supported, valued, heard, and empowered leads to better teamwork, higher job satisfaction, improved retention, and ultimately safer, higher-quality patient care.
As a nurse leader, I am committed to fostering a culture that prioritizes wellness, resilience, professional growth, and work-life balance. My goal is to help create an environment where caregivers can thrive, not just survive, so they can continue providing compassionate and exceptional care while maintaining their own well-being.
What advice would you give to nursing students or early-career nurses?
Never lose sight of the reason you chose nursing, especially during the challenging moments, because your purpose will keep you grounded and motivated. Always strive to do what is right for your patients rather than what is most convenient, as integrity and compassion are the foundations of an exceptional nurse.
What accomplishment in your nursing journey are you most proud of?
One of the accomplishments I am most proud of in my nursing journey is witnessing the growth and success of the nurses I have had the privilege to mentor. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing student nurses develop into confident, compassionate clinicians and eventually emerge as nursing leaders themselves.
Being part of their journey, from teaching fundamental skills and building confidence to helping them navigate challenges and discover their leadership potential, has been incredibly fulfilling. Their success is a reminder that nursing is not only about caring for patients but also about investing in and uplifting the next generation of nurses.
Seeing those individuals go on to lead teams, mentor others, and make meaningful contributions to healthcare is one of the greatest honors of my career and a legacy I am deeply proud to be a part.
Outside of nursing, what are some hobbies or things you enjoy doing?
Outside of nursing, I enjoy gardening and creating artwork with my children, as both allow me to relax, express creativity, and spend meaningful quality time with my family.
Finish this sentence: “Nursing is…”
Nursing is a noble calling that is not always easy, but it is always worthwhile, and as long as you lead with compassion and put your heart into caring for others, you will never go wrong.
Thank you, Alvin Baluyut, for your commitment to advancing nursing and improving the health of communities across Illinois. We are proud to recognize you as this week’s ANA-Illinois Member of the Week.
