SESSION DETAILS:

With over 200,000 newly licensed nurses (NLN) entering the workforce yearly, it is increasingly important to embed foundational professional concepts in transition to practice programming. Ethical decision making, professional standards, and social determinants of health (SDOH) are complex yet essential for safe patient care; however, translation from theory into practice can be challenging.

An accredited Nurse Residency Program welcomes over 1500 NLNs yearly across 10 Illinois hospitals and applies innovative learner engagement strategies supporting understanding and application of ethical decision making, professional standards, and SDOH. Gamification implemented in both group-based and self-paced formats promotes engagement, reflection, and practical application.

The ANA Adventure Game, a travel-inspired approach, aligns with the ANA Nursing Standards of Practice promoting awareness of nursing standards, such as ethics (Standard 7). Through facilitated discussion, teamwork, and shared problem-solving, NLNs navigate real-life scenarios to earn “Sky Miles,” collect “passport stamps” through shared practice examples, and respond to “turbulent” moments prompting reflection of unmet standards. The session concludes with an instructor-led debrief which supports critical thinking, identifies knowledge gaps, and strengthens professional application.

This event offers 1.0 contact hour to attendees.
