SESSION DETAILS:
This presentation, From Principle to Practice, explores how the nursing Code of Ethics can move beyond policy language and become a practical guide for everyday clinical judgment, team communication, and professional accountability.
The overall objective of the presentation is to help nurses translate ethical principles into clear, confident action in real-world situations where time pressure, uncertainty, and competing priorities often complicate decision-making.
Rather than treating ethics as an abstract ideal, this session focuses on usable approaches that support ethical practice at the bedside, in leadership, and across interprofessional teams. It will introduce decision-making frameworks that help nurses assess patient values, clinical risks, professional duties, and organizational constraints in a structured way. Practical tools such as reflective pause questions, brief ethics huddles, documentation prompts, and unit-based checklists will be presented as strategies that can strengthen moral clarity and consistency. Case-based examples will illustrate common challenges, including conflicts around autonomy, informed consent, end-of-life care, privacy, and equitable treatment.
The presentation also highlights innovative ideas for embedding ethics into daily workflow, including peer debriefing models, microlearning ethics rounds, and digital support tools. In this area, artificial intelligence can assist by organizing policy information, summarizing relevant guidance, generating case scenarios for staff education, and prompting reflective questions during ethically complex situations. Importantly, AI is positioned not as a substitute for nursing judgment, but as a support that can enhance ethical awareness, preparation, and timely decision-making in contemporary practice.
